FWIW, I’m not all that interested in exploring whether or not I find Ben’s arguments persuasive here. I know far too little about particle physics & CERN to engage in that discussion meaningfully. Perhaps I should have tagged this appropriately so it doesn’t seem like I’m +1-ing.
I am interested in the broader phenomenon of researchers expressing their frustrations with scientific discovery, especially when it highlights considerations not usually captured in classical experiment design formalisms.
I think Ben’s rant is a good example of this, along with the various responses from the physics community. Good-faith expert community dialogue fleshing out the nature of compelling scientific argument & evidence is something I’m very curious about in general.
(That said, I do agree with one of the comments on his blog asking whether his irreverence is more productively channelled at other scientific enterprises such as drug discovery)
